Journey up the Stairs Journey up the Stairs is a first-person video documenting a walk up the stairwell of a seven-storey building. The space appears ordinary at first. Yet with every step, noise derived from the texture of the stairs themselves begins to leak into the environment. The ascent grows increasingly unstable, until the entire space is overtaken by visual noise generated from still images of the stair surface. I made this work in the apartment building where my partner lived at the time, on our third anniversary — three months before our breakup.
